Managing Group Or Team Decision Making Effectively

How To Manage Group Or Team Decision Making EffectivelyIn a group or a team, the effective and quality decisions are required by managers in solving the problems in the best possible ways in order to get maximizing or optimizing outcomes at the end.

In order to make and manager effective and quality group or team decisions, the manager needs to follow the following requirements:

1. Encourage Participation And Avoid Domination

Each member in a group should be allowed to participate in decision making process. No one should be ignored as everyone has his importance. Give value and respect to their opinions and suggestion. No one should be allowed to dominate and impose his decision to a group or team decision. In this way, lots of information will be gathered to make a quality decision. For example, the manager should allow young and new team member to give his opinions on how to increase sales in the market and avoid domination of seniors in group or team discussions.

2. Align With Main Goal

There are no personal goals to be followed which are against common goals & objectives in a group decision. Hidden and personal agenda to displace main goal should be controlled in order to achieve common goals. For example, if a senior group member tries to gain personal advantage i.e., to increase his salary, argue for increment in his salary rather than the quality work of the team to achieve common goals.

3. Accept Constructive Conflict

As every member may have different perspectives and approaches to solve a problem, so the manager should accept constructive conflict existed among members. It helps in considering different points of views and get alternatives in order to find the best solution. It also helps in getting more information and ideas before reaching to a final decision. However, affective conflict should be avoided which is based on emotional and personal disagreement leading towards goal displacement and creates disputes among members and affects team work.

Getting positive criticism from members helps in improving the approaches to solve a particular problem.

4. Encourage Creativity

The team members should be encouraged to be creative in solving a problem effectively.

When members develop new ideas to solve the problems, then they should be encouraged by rewarding with bonuses but should not be demoralized on failure of ideas as the new ideas may work or not will be revealed after implementation, so they need time to do little experiments on it before implementing new ideas. In this way, custom-made solutions are generated. To become creatives, they should do brainstorming to generate many new ideas which they create to solve a particular problem. These ideas help in finding many alternatives from which the manager choose the best one to solve the problem. For example, after brainstorming of team members, the manager finds the best solution from alternatives (offer discounts to customers, add new product feature, hire qualified staff, etc.,) to address the problem i.e., to increase the sales, the manager needs to choose the one best solution (offer discounts to customers) to improve declining sales.
