In Which Two Situations Is Autocratic Leadership Effective?
In case of emergencies, the quick and quality decisions are required in a
short period of time as the market is continuously and rapidly changing. So in such
situation, the autocratic style of leadership works effectively.
Characteristics of Autocratic Leadership
(i) Dictatorship Style
The leader dictated the work tasks to employees and they must follow the
set guidelines as directed by the leader.
(ii) Unilateral Decision
The leader makes unilateral decision without the mutual consent of all of
the members.
(iii) No Participation And Delegation of Authority
Participation of members in decision-making is very restricted. There is no
delegation of authority i.e., all the decisions are made by the leader himself
and others have no rights to manage job tasks by themselves or on the behalf of
leader. For example, if the leader sets the working methods without allowing
any team member to give his opinions and suggestions about the decision made,
this style of leadership is autocratic.
Advantages of AL
(i) Quick And Quality Decision
If the leader is visionary and has charismatic personality, then he is able
to make better and quality decisions quickly and on time. It is due to his past
experiences and knowledge.
(ii) Higher Performance
If the decision is correct and suitable to the situation, then the working
performance of the organization’ members are improved and end goals are
achieved efficiently and effectively.
(iii) Motivation of Members And Employees
Members and employees are more motivated when they encouraged by the leader
who has vision to achieve higher results by influencing, inspiring and
rewarding them. For example, if the visionary leader encourages his team
members and employees to work better for the achievement of the organization by
giving them the appreciation on improved performance, then they are more
motivated to achieve set goals.
(iv) Suitable To Specific Situations
Such type of leadership is suitable for such situations where the leader
has to make quality decisions by himself due to crisis or when the new
organization is establishing and he has to make decisions for making the
corporate strategies.
(v) Effective Communication
The leader, who possess effective communication skills, can effectively
communicate to his team members as he conveys his messages directly to his team
members i.e., the message flows from the leader to members. For example, if the
leader effectively communicates his messages to team member, then they
understand the meaning of messages easily and effectively.
(vi) No Conflict
As there is no need to agree in making decision, so no conflicts and
disputes arise in making the decisions of the organization.
Disadvantages of AL
(i) No Participation
As members are not allowed to take participation in decision-making, so the
quality decisions may not be taken at the end. It is also due to the lack of
mutual consent of all of the team members which decreases the quality of
decisions, especially, if the leader is not visionary.
(ii) No Delegation of Authority
As most of the decisions are made by the leader by himself, so there is no
delegation of authority to perform work tasks and form different working
methods by members themselves.
(iii) Lack of Satisfaction
Members lack satisfaction at workplace as they are not allowed to
participate in decision-making. They may have better suggestions and opinions
than their leader. So, they show dissatisfaction with the decisions made by
their leader. For example, if the leader makes a decision about work shift from
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM to 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, then the members and employees may be
disagreed with the decision taken and show dissatisfaction as most of them may
feel comfortable to work from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM work shift instead of 10:00 AM
– 6:00 PM work shift.
