A Leader Who Involves Employees In Decision Making Is Called?
What Is Democratic Style of Leadership (DSL)?
Characteristics of Democratic Style of Leadership
(i) Mutual Consent of Members
In democratic style of leadership, the decision is made with the mutual
consent of the members. In case of any dispute, the consent of majority of the
members is applied.
(ii) Participation And Delegation of Authority
All members are participated in decision-making process. The leader assigns
the tasks and gives the authority to his subordinates to make decisions on his
behalf. So, the rights and duties are transferred to lower managers in this leadership
style.
Advantages of DSL
1. Quality Decisions
Quality decisions are made as everyone gives his suggestions & opinions
and having his own perspective and approach in making and solving the decisions. They share their ideas,
knowledge & experiences which help in making quality decisions. So, the
collective efforts are made in making the quality decisions.
2. Improved Working Performance
Every member collectively works as everyone has rights to share his ideas
and opinions and these are listened and accepted by leader if appropriate and
valuable to the situation. For example, if the employees give suggestion about
new and improved office equipment to be used in the business so that they work
well and process the job tasks efficiently and effectively, then the leader
should accept that suggestion if the organization has sufficient funds to buy
such expensive equipment for using the office work tasks.
3. Achieved Common Goals
As all the members agree to reach the set goals, so they work collectively
and coordinate with each other to accomplish goals.
4. Coordination Among Members
Due to coordination among members, the working performance is increased and
improved as the job tasks are shared and assigned to relevant skilled persons
who perform the work tasks efficiently and effectively. For example, the
marketing campaigns are managed by marketing department, hiring and training of
employees, etc., are managed by human resource management department, etc., and
all of these departments coordinate with each other and share relevant information
with each other when required such as marketing department may need to know
what kind of new skillful and talented employees are hired for the marketing
department. HRM department is interested in knowing the working performance of
recently new selected & trained employees who participate and operate
recently new launched marketing campaign. So, these department need
coordination to work effectively and achieve common goals.
Disadvantages of DSL
1. Disputes & Conflicts
Members may create disputes and conflicts as they may not be agreed to
carry on one single decision which affects the working performance.
2. Time Consuming
Members require consensuses, which may take lots of time and ultimately, it
delays in making quick decision, especially, when the situation is rapidly
changing.
Conclusion
So, under democratic style, the leader encourages and engages all the members in decision-making process and he delegates his authority to members so that they also perform job tasks according to shared skills, knowledge, experiences and mutual understanding in order to reach goals & targets of the organization
